Recently, someone described the Aero Twin Bed as minimalist. That really made me think, what is minimalism? I had never thought about the subject very much, to be honest. I’ve heard of it, and had a somewhat positive view of the idea, but never thought that our designs were minimalist. So, I went to Wikipedia to look up the definition, and here’s what I found:
“Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.”
That doesn’t sound like us, but the one part of that which caught my attention was the part about fundamental features, because the one idea that we try to stick with in our design is ‘functional’. Fundamental features and functional sound very much alike, so I guess from that respect we are somewhat minimalist.
[pullquote align=”left”]Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.[/pullquote] My favorite designer Frank Lloyd Wright is quoted as saying “Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” We try to follow this idea in all of our furniture designs. The idea of having furniture to “look at” does not go with our philosophy of life or living, so maybe that does make us minimalist.
